Singh Thattha Beard Wrap Disclaimer

st.png

The Victorian Labor government and the Victorian Department of Health recently approved the use of the Singh Thattha beard wrap technique. This is a technique where people with facial hair can wrap their beards in an elastic band to create a better seal when wearing N95/P2 masks.

Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed the Singh Thattha technique can now be used in Victorian health services. Click here to read her statement.

Please be advised that while the Singh Thattha method is permitted in healthcare settings in Victoria, it does not meet the requirements outlined in AS/NZS 1715:2009 and AS/NZS ISO 16975:3:2023. RESP-FIT has deemed this method to be "non-compliant." Click here to read their statement.

At Fit Test Victoria, we maintain that beard wrapping does not align with any international standards, or respirator manufacturers' instructions, which require being clean-shaven for the safe and proper use of tight-fitting respirators. However, we are willing to perform Singh Thattha mask fit tests when requested by healthcare workers or clinical placement students in line with the Victorian government's endorsement of the method.

Please note that beard wrapping is only approved in healthcare settings and cannot be used in any other industry such as construction, quarrying, mining, automotive, agriculture, etc.

We recommend verifying with your workplace or school to ensure this technique will be accepted.

Fit Test Victoria will not be held liable for any outcomes or consequences resulting from the Singh Thattha beard wrap technique during your mask fit test or when wearing N95/P2 masks in a clinical setting.

Your fit test report will note that this method was used during your mask fit test. When booking a Singh Thattha fit test, you must acknowledge and agree to this disclaimer.
